Nomex® Aramid Paper
Nomex® - DuPont, is a synthetic, aromatic polyaramide polymer with excellent properties.
Manufactured in a complex paper process with two different types of fibre (flakes and fibrides), Nomex offers outstanding chemical, mechanical and electrical resistance. Particularly in transformers, generators, motors and other electrical devices, Nomex® (usually in combination with impregnating agents) provides long-lasting insulation with considerable reserve capacity. The material is flame-retardant (UL 94 V0).
Even after 40 years on the market, Nomex® from DuPont still has the best possible combination of thermal, chemical and electrical resistance. There are now other similar products on the market, but they all bring specific disadvantages with them.
DuPont stocks a large number of specialised products to enable adaptation to the requirements of the application in question.

Nomex® 410 – basic version, heavily calendered for good electrical and mechanical properties (available from 0.05 mm to 0.350 mm)

Nomex® 411 – non-calendered Nomex® 410 for better absorption of impregnating agents, cushioning effect

Nomex® 818 – mica-filled variant for extremely enhanced corona resistance and dielectric strength

Nomex® E56A – relatively light and therefore less costly alternative to Nomex® 410 for economical application

Nomex® N196 – improved capillary effect for faster and more reliable impregnation

Nomex® 843S - a semi-conductive variant for field configuration in high-voltage machines
CMC Klebetechnik supplies adhesive tapes, laminates, punched shaped parts and rolls made from many of the versions listed above (some Nomex® versions are only available on request and in minimum quantities).
Advantages at a glance:
- has very good dielectric strength, even without impregnation
- In its compressed form, Nomex® has good mechanical strength
- allows continuous use up to 220 °C with no loss of positive properties (min. 10 years), therefore higher power densities and a longer service life are possible
- has good corona resistance
- can be used for very low temperature applications up to almost 0°K
- retains its dielectric strength even at high humidity
- is extremely resistant to many solvents, acids and alkalis
- is very easy to saturate and impregnate
- In many cases, Nomex® is flame-retardant in accordance with UL94 and is self-extinguishing (V0)
- is used in a very large number of insulation systems as the base insulation and is UL-listed (E34739)
- can be used up to -196 °C
- can be used as high-temperature-resistant thermal insulation (Nomex 411: 0.12 W/mK)
